Passed pawn

Concept, beginner

Also called Passer.

A pawn with no enemy pawn in front of it, on its own file or on either file next to it, so only pieces can stop it.

The pawn on b5 is passed: no black pawn can block or capture it. In the endgame a passed pawn ties down the other side, which must keep a piece in front of it.
