Fix your weakest link

Strategy idea, intermediate

Also called Improve your worst piece.

When there is nothing urgent, improve the part of your position that is doing least.

In chess this is often a piece with no good square, such as a bishop blocked by its own pawns. Find it a better square before starting anything new.

Why it matters

When the parts depend on each other, as the pieces in a position or the steps in a production line do, the weakest one sets the limit. Where one great result is enough, invest in your strongest instead.

Away from the game

When a project has no crisis, spend the time on the slowest step or the least-supported person.

New to chess? The examples here use it. Play your first moves (five minutes), then learn chess from the beginning, one short lesson at a time.

Try it yourself

Nothing is urgent. Which White piece is doing least?
