Strategy

Cooperate or defend

Know when to trust, when to protect yourself, and how reputation builds.

Why it matters

Most of life is repeated: the same colleagues, suppliers and classmates. Being trustworthy but not a pushover, cooperating first and answering betrayal, builds the reputation that makes future deals easy.

The question to ask

Will we deal with each other again, and what does this choice teach them about me?

At work

Start a new supplier on good terms and pay on time, but keep the contract clear on what happens if they miss a delivery.

In study

In a group project, do your share first and say early, and plainly, when someone is not doing theirs.

Lessons

Practise it in a game, about five minutes against bots: the Prisoner's Dilemma lab.

Use it in a work case, a short story of linked decisions: The group project, Your first job.

Practise and review

Questions from every lesson above, in mixed order. You do not need to finish a lesson first.

In the reference

  • Cooperate or defendWhen you will meet again, cooperation and reputation pay. In a one-off, protect yourself in the terms, but remember that few deals are truly one-off.
