Caro-Kann Defence

Opening, beginner, Semi-open game (1.e4, not 1...e5)

Also called Caro Kann.

Black prepares ...d5 while keeping the light-squared bishop free: solid and reliable.

After 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5, Black challenges the centre like the French, but the bishop on c8 can still come out. It is a favourite of players who like safe, sound positions.

1.e4 c6
