Queen's Gambit
Also called QGD, QGA, Queen's Gambit Declined, Queen's Gambit Accepted.
White offers the c-pawn to pull Black's d-pawn away from the centre.
After 1.d4 d5 2.c4, it is not a true gambit: if Black takes with 2…dxc4 (the Queen’s Gambit Accepted), White usually wins the pawn back. Declining with 2…e6 (the Queen’s Gambit Declined) keeps a strong point on d5.
One of the soundest openings in chess.
